Horizontal Mutual Aid

What is Horizontal Mutual Aid?

Mutual aid is the practice of caring for one another: from each according to their abilities, to each according to need. It is not transactional nor hierarchical nor shaming, but instead life-affirming and reciprocal. It is not charity, nor saviorism, nor a shelter for capital. It is an assertion of self-determination and collective power. By the community and for the community, with consent.

The practice of making sure that our neighbors’ basic needs are met through our grocery delivery work is anti-capitalist love work. It begins with survival, but it does not end until we have a world where everyone’s basic needs are always met.

Let’s take care of each other. By us for us.
Hãy chăm sóc lẫn nhau. Bởi chúng mình cho chúng mình.
እርስ በርሳችን እንከባከብ። በኛ ለኛ።
Vamos a cuidarnos unes a otres. Por nosotres, para nosotres.
守望相助。
ነንባዕልትና ንተሓባሐብ። በባዕልትና ንባዕልትና።

COVID-19 Survival Fund

Our love for each other is greater than capitalism’s lack of effective planning. In Seattle, we have created a COVID19 Mutual Aid group, which aims to organize material support. Immediately we are providing grocery and supply deliveries.

We are preparing to expand this to running errands, dog walking, childcare, caregiving, and mental/emotional support among people impacted by the pandemic. We are acting alongside those globally to show that our communities take care of each other and we also take care of ourselves.

We can’t allow greed to guide our actions. We need healing love and compassion for one another.
